Boris Jean-Francois Mondet

Boris comes from Grenoble in France, where he studied a Bachelor in physics and mechanics at Université Joseph Fourier (now Université Grenoble Alpes). He entered the Master program in acoustics at DTU Elektro after this and joined the dual-degree program with KAIST: "I spent the first year in Denmark and the second year in South Korea. It was a great experience and this dual degree program is a unique opportunity".

"My aim is to get over these limitations and give acoustic consultants the means to work more efficiently."

Boris continues "I am really into room acoustics, and how to design a space so that sound will have good quality. I am interested in the different ways good acoustic conditions can be achieved, my Master's thesis was about sound diffusers for example."

After high school I wanted to enter an architecture school but I didn't pass the entrance exam, and already before that time I was interested in sound as well. So I got really excited when I found out about room acoustics, this field is the perfect combination of my interests. Since then I have always tried to focus my studies on acoustics, and it is the reason why I entered the Master program in DTU.

When acoustic consultants work on a building or renovation project, they need to predict how the newly designed room will behave. The problem is that the prediction tools that are currently available have some limitations: either they are not completely accurate or they are too time-consuming for practical use. My aim is to get over these limitations and give acoustic consultants the means to work more efficiently.

I think the ACT group is one of the best places in the world for that kind of research. There are many professors and PhD students working together, it is very easy to get suggestions or advice for our projects. The measurement facilities are also impressive, and the working conditions offered in Denmark are a big plus. Every employee is given some responsibilities, initiatives are always welcome, and a big importance is given to life outside the workplace.

I am conducting this research in collaboration with the company Odeon A/S. It produces a simulation software for room acoustics in which the findings of the project will be implemented. I am working to develop a calculation method focused on low frequencies that would simulate the impulse response of any given room. Finite Difference in the Time Domain as well as time-domain Finite Element Method are currently considered as potential solutions. In the software, this new low frequency method will be run in parallel with the high frequency method already existing in order to limit the time needed to perform simulations. Therefore the two methods should complement each other while giving convergent results at medium frequencies.
